Oh, No!

With graduation celebrations over and Memorial Day on the horizon, I was excited to put out my felt flag wreath on Sunday.  This was the wreath I made for the winter Pinterest challenge.  Directions can be found here.

But my excitement only last till Monday morning.  Why you ask?

Well, the temperature here over the holiday weekend was in the 90’s and the humidity made it feel even hotter.  Everything seemed like it was melting in the heat…..including my wreath!!

See how sad and egg shaped the wreath looks after a day of being out in the heat?  I guess pipe insulation gets a little soft when warm and the weight of the felt didn’t help it either.  I even had a few of the felt squares pop off, straight pin still intact.

So what’s a girl to do?  I tried using skewers to help support the form.  But it only looked more misshapen.  I stuffed the inside hoping to give it more strength (remember this is pipe insulation so there is a slit to allow it to fit over a pipe) but that proved futile.

So, what did I do?  I admitted failure.  Yep, sometimes you just have to chalk one up and move on with your day.  Good thing Wal-Mart’s close by!

I picked up a Styrofoam wreath form for a few bucks and began plucking straight pin tipped felt squares from the failed wreath.  I say plucking cause the whole time I was removing the pieces I felt like I was plucking a chicken!  Still makes me giggle.

Once the feathers felt was removed I began placing them on the Styrofoam wreath using the same method as before.  Because the new wreath has more area to cover there were not enough squares.  But since it was Memorial Day I spread out what I had so I could get my wreath back up.  I’ll go back before the 4th of July holiday and finish out the bare spots.  But for now she’s good.

I actually am happy this was a failed craft because I love the fuller look of the Styrofoam form.  Anyone else have a craft that failed but the redo was so much better than the original?   I surely can’t be alone, can I?

Graduation Gifts

This time of year I get lots of graduation announcements - especially this year with my son graduating himself.  Money is always a crowd pleasing gift for teenagers but I don’t like sticking some cash in a card and handing it to the recipient.  Don’t get me wrong….doing a card with cash is fine….it’s just not me.  Like for Christmas when I gave something a little “corny.”  I like being creative when giving cash.

So what did I do this year for graduation gifts?

This was the only money lei I saw at graduation Friday night.  It was super easy to make.  I bought a lei with navy flowers (school color) at the Dollar Tree.  Using white curling ribbon (other school color) I attached fan folded bills in between each flower.  I left a little extra ribbon on each so I could use my scissors to curl each side.

I had seen these made before where multiple leis were completely disassembled and restrung on curling ribbon.  Because I was able to fan out the bills to fill in empty space I went the easy route and left my lei intact.

Note:  Using crisp bills works much better when making this item.

I also gave out several of these Break Glass In Emergency gifts.

The frames I picked up at the Dollar Tree.  Using Word, I printed and trimmed out the letters.  Since these were floating frames, I sandwiched the letters and cash between the glass so nothing moved around.

I even got creative with the wrapping.  Using the blue and white crinkle shreds (this particular recipient’s school colors) I cushioned the frame in the box.  The box was wrapped using part of a table cloth from my son’s graduation party.  I also used some of the circles I got punch happy with from the party to frame the card.  The card was glued to a piece of cardstock on top of the package.

So that's what the 2012 graduates in my life got as gifts.  So what is everyone else giving?  I can't wait to discover more unique gift giving ideas.

Class Act

Boy, has this has been a busy weekend!

Graduation ceremonies were held Friday night.  It was a wonderful ceremony.  Along with all the pomp and circumstance came the laughter, tears, and final farewells.  The Class of 2012 has turned their tassels, tossed their caps, and made memories to last a lifetime.  Congrats to all the seniors graduating this year!!

Graduation was followed the next day with a party for family and friends at our house.  It was great having everyone over to help celebrate this special occasion.   It was also a good excuse to get my craft on!  Let’s take a look, shall we?

My son’s school colors are navy and white which became the color palette for the party.   Silver was added for an accent color.

As guests came to the front door they were greeted with an update to the front door decor.  Traditional flowers were replaced with graduation items and garland hung around the door frame.

The garland was created by sewing a running stitch through circles created by a scrapbook circle punch.  I must have went punch happy because I still have circles left – this was just a way to try to use them up.  Circle garland was also draped across the front of the flower bucket.  To update the bucket I stuffed it with polyfill and topped it with shredded, crinkled gift fill in blue and white.  A couple of balloon weights with stars were inserted.  I printed out a few items that represented my son and his school that I taped to skewers that were inserted into the polyfill.

Upon entering the house, guests were greeted by a table where they could leave a message for the graduate as well as see his senior pictures and browse the My Publisher book I created for him.  He had also made the front page of the paper a few days before graduation so the article was framed, draped by his honor cords, and hung on the wall near the table.

My original intent with the My Publisher book was to have guests leave a message on some blank pages I added at the end of the book but the pages were very slick and I worried a pen would smear.  [I still owe a post about the details of the book – hopefully soon.]  Instead I created a wishes jar where guest could write a message on a slip of paper that I will adhere to blank pages later.   The jar was a shatterproof container I picked up at Wal-Mart.  The ribbon and tag were added.   Notice there are more circles?  I told you I went punch happy!  I placed double sided tape on some ribbon left over from the cupcake stand and laid the circles on top.  The tag was created in word and attached with curling ribbon.

I wanted a backdrop to hide some of the normal house stuff in this area.  This one was so fun and easy to make.  Square plates were attached with hot glue to a foam insulation board that I got a Lowe’s.  The insulation board was a little expensive at around $9 but it was super easy for me to handle and cut.

Once the board was cut to size for the area I place the table in front and marked where they intersected.  This is where I began gluing the plates.  It was pure luck that four plates across was perfect.  I added purchased numbers and hand cut card stock letters with hot glue.

The drink station was located in a short hallway that leads to the garage.  Again, I wanted to hide normal house items like the garage door.  In this area I was originally going to hang plastic table clothes as a backdrop using an extra shower curtain tension rod I had - except I didn’t remember that I had already used the extra tension rod with a curtain on it for my closet.  No big deal, I thought.  I could just remove the curtain for now then replace it in the closet after the party.  Well….for some reason I couldn’t get the rings off over the rubber ends.  Lucky for me the curtain was white so I left it.  I love happy accidents!

The banner is an outdoor flag borrowed from a friend that I pinned across the top to the curtain.  Using a silver plastic table cloth cut in half, I draped it around the curtain hooks to hide the hooks and the tension bar.  A couple of purchased swirl decoration were added.   The table held two plastic drink dispensers containing sweet tea and cherry limeade.  Extra cherries and limes are in the bowls.

The food table, which was shown as a sneak peek here, looks much better filled with food.  My son decided on typical teenage boy food for the menu - pizza and chicken fingers – which meant no cooking for me!  I didn’t want to just put pizza boxes on the table so I created tiered platters for the food.  At the Dollar Tree I purchased several platters of the same size as well as bowls of various heights.  Each bowl was hot glued to the platter to create the tiers.  Condiments for the chicken fingers were put into squeeze bottles and labels added.

The Congrats banner was printed on cardstock and each letter cut out with an exacto knife.  After punching holes in the corners each letter was strung on curling ribbon.  These letters were created in Word and there are two per page.  Each sheet was cut in half.  The idea behind cutting out the letters was to allow the color of the tablecloth to show through.

Because my house is on the smaller end (~1,300 sq. feet) there’s not a lot of room to set up food tables and have room for people to sit and eat.  Which meant this table was set up between two rooms.  Again I wanted a backdrop but I didn’t need anything that would block the light or the conversation between rooms.  Each small piece of wall behind the table had a white and a silver tablecloth draped down it.  I flipped the end of each tablecloth over a doubled up piece of curling ribbon that was stapled to the wall.  A couple more swirl decorations were added.  The opening between each wall was filled with fishing line to which circles in two sizes as well as some purchased graduation cap cutouts were added.

Well, that’s it for the decorations.  I enjoyed spending the time creating these items for this celebration of my son’s achievements.  I hope that you find something here that sparks the creative juices for your own celebration!

It's The Final Countdown

Ahh -- the 80's.  Every time I hear anyone say "countdown" I can't get this Europe song out of my head!  Feel free to sing along....

Well, that was a nice walk down memory lane, wasn't it?  But that's not the countdown I'm talking about today.  Our countdown toward high school graduation has begun!  By this time next week my oldest son will have walked the line to receive his diploma and we'll be setting up for his graduation party.

I'll have full details on his party in a later post in the new few weeks but for now how about a sneak peek?

Because I don't want to spend all day next Saturday setting up for the party I spent a few hours the other day working out exactly how I wanted to set things up.  This also allowed me to see if I needed to get any additional decorations that I could pick up this weekend and avoid any last minute running to get something I forgot.  A few of the areas can't stay up an entire week (some block doors to important rooms like my bedroom!) but other zones that aren't in the way will stay up till the party ~ like this soon to be food table.

Sneak Peek Work In Progress Shot
Along with family, we'll be having some of his friends over and I want to avoid spending all day in the kitchen so the menu will consists of quintessential teenage boy food - chicken fingers and pizza - which will fill the currently empty platters.  I also didn't want to deal with cutting a cake so we'll be doing cupcakes which will fill the white tower in the center.  Once we have the party I'll be back to give more details on all the other items but for now I'll be sharing details on the cupcake tower.

I checked out a few party stores in town for cupcake stands and after the sticker shock wore off I knew I could make my own.  Supplies were simple:  2 sheets of foam core, ribbon, exacto knife, and hot glue.

My base size was determined by our supper the other night - a pizza box.  Each subsequent layer was made 1" smaller on all sides.  The height of the base was determined again by supper ~ it's the height of two pizza boxes.  The interior supports were "eyeballed" for size and they are made from two squares put together with slits halfway down the middle.  I made them extra tall because I'm adding a decoration to the cupcakes.  Each layer as well as the base were hot glued together.  To cover the raw edges of the foam core I attached ribbon in his school color.  Because I want to reuse this cupcake stand for an upcoming baby shower I attached the ribbon with glue dots rather than hot glue.

And there you have it ~ a cupcake stand!  I probably spent a couple of hours on this project with most of the time spent measuring and cutting out each piece.  And the price?  Well, here's a breakdown:

2 Foam Core - Free (had left over from another project but was $1 each at Dollar Tree)
Hot Glue - Free (on hand)
Glue Dots - Free (on hand)
Ribbon - $1.97 at Wal-Mart

Total:  $1.97

Since I had most of the materials on hand this project came in under $2.00.  And I still have over half a spool of ribbon to use for other projects.  Not bad considering it is twice the size and only a tenth of the cost of the party store's stands.

I'll be back with updated pictures of the stand full of cupcakes in a few days.  Only 7 days, 1 hour, and 56 minutes to go!!

For Mom

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom and soon-to-be moms out there!  I hope everyone has had a wonderful day with their families!

This post is a little late but I wanted to share anyway.

The blog world is full of yarn wreaths and I've been slow to get on the bandwagon but this weekend I decided to try my hand at one.  I couldn't resist pinning this unique wreath on Pinterest and after checking out the Rhonda's tutorial over at Home Made it spurred my imagination.  Since it is Mother's Day weekend and if Dad can have a wreath then why can't Mom?

After hitting up Goodwill and digging through my jewelry box here's what I came up with......

There are tons of tutorials on how to create a yarn wreath so I'm not going in to those details.  The straw wreath form is from Hobby Lobby.   The shirt was a Goodwill purchase as well as the brooch.  I simply trimmed as close as possible to the stitching up to the collar.  The brooch is simply pushed into the wreath form.  The pearl necklace I borrowed from my jewelry box and it is secured with straight pins.  The letters are foam core.  I'm not happy with them but I didn't have any letters big enough so these are temporarily attached with straight pins for now.

PSST -- I've got some plans for the basic wreath form that I'll post about once it's complete!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY EVERYONE!

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day is always a little bittersweet for me as a daughter because I am not able to spend it with my mom celebrating all that makes her special.  Today marked my 21st Mother's Day without her and my 18th Mother's Day as a mother myself without her.

While it's been over 20 years of not having her here I still miss her.  I miss being able to share the crazy things my kids do and say.  I miss being able to share the boys' accomplishments.  I miss being able to ask for advice when I'm at my wits end with teenage boys.  I miss that she couldn't hold my children and love on them.

I just plain miss her and wish she was here.

As a daughter, I look back at all the things left unsaid over the years. Not the "I love you's" because I knew she loved me - and she knew that I loved her.  I wish I would've told her more how wonderful she was, how thankful I was for everything she did for me, how someday I hoped to be as selfless as she was when I was growing up.

How much I love her still.

For some reason, this year has been especially hard on me.  Perhaps it's because graduation is just around the corner for my oldest son with the start of college looming in the next few months.  Perhaps it because several of my friends have become first time grandparents this past year and I realize how much my boys missed out on not having my mom around.  Whatever the reason is it makes me think about how much I need my mom.

Even now, I still really need my mom.

Tomorrow begins another work week, another week of baseball games, another week closer to graduation and even though Mother's Day may have officially passed with the ticking of the clock my love and admiration for my mom is remembered everyday in my heart.
