With graduation celebrations over and Memorial Day on the horizon, I was excited to put out my felt flag wreath on Sunday. This was the wreath I made for the winter Pinterest challenge. Directions can be found here.
But my excitement only last till Monday morning. Why you ask?
Well, the temperature here over the holiday weekend was in the 90’s and the humidity made it feel even hotter. Everything seemed like it was melting in the heat…..including my wreath!!
See how sad and egg shaped the wreath looks after a day of being out in the heat? I guess pipe insulation gets a little soft when warm and the weight of the felt didn’t help it either. I even had a few of the felt squares pop off, straight pin still intact.
So what’s a girl to do? I tried using skewers to help support the form. But it only looked more misshapen. I stuffed the inside hoping to give it more strength (remember this is pipe insulation so there is a slit to allow it to fit over a pipe) but that proved futile.
So, what did I do? I admitted failure. Yep, sometimes you just have to chalk one up and move on with your day. Good thing Wal-Mart’s close by!
I picked up a Styrofoam wreath form for a few bucks and began plucking straight pin tipped felt squares from the failed wreath. I say plucking cause the whole time I was removing the pieces I felt like I was plucking a chicken! Still makes me giggle.
Once the feathers felt was removed I began placing them on the Styrofoam wreath using the same method as before. Because the new wreath has more area to cover there were not enough squares. But since it was Memorial Day I spread out what I had so I could get my wreath back up. I’ll go back before the 4th of July holiday and finish out the bare spots. But for now she’s good.
I actually am happy this was a failed craft because I love the fuller look of the Styrofoam form. Anyone else have a craft that failed but the redo was so much better than the original? I surely can’t be alone, can I?
