Bye, Baby Bunting...

...Daddy's gone a-hunting.
To catch a rabbit skin.
To wrap his baby bunting in.

Do you remember that nursery rhyme/lullaby?  I sang it many times to each of my boys when they were babies.  For the baby shower my friend hosted last weekend I created a bunting (or banner) for the fireplace.  The mom-to-be loved it so much that she took it home for the baby's room.

Here's the simple instructions for creating your own.

The pennants are from eighteen25's Christmas banner free printable.  I printed them on white cardstock and cut out.  If the colors in the free printable don't work with your shower another option would be to use scrapbook paper or wrapping paper using the free printable as a template.  Unless these items are a heavier weight I would suggest mounting them on plain cardstock to avoid curling of the edges.

The letters are from the school supply section at WalMart and are similar to post its with a repositionable glue on one end.  I brushed the back of each letter with ModPodge to adhere them to the pennants.

The butterflies are attached with a double stick foam square adhesive.  I've had packages of these for some time and believe they came from the Dollar Tree.  This gave the butterfly a little three dimensional look.
The butterflies themselves were wooden pieces attached to the letters that can be seen sitting on top of the mantel.  I simply scanned, printed on cardstock and cut out.  These were used in several of the displays for the shower.

I laid out the pennants so I could gauge how long the ribbon needed to be.  I started out wanting to use a solid ribbon since the pennants were patterned but wasn't happy with the look when it was all laid out.  The ribbon I thought would be too busy was all I had left and I think it is what made the bunting!

I simply ran a bead of hot glue on the top of the printed side of the pennant and placed the ribbon on top, allowing the glue to cool before moving on to the next.  For spacing I just used my finger.  I left enough ribbon at each of the ends to make a small bow.

That's all there was to it and didn't it turn out so cute!?!

Baby Food

In this post, I shared some of the pics from a recent baby shower my friend and I hosted.  I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the great food we prepared.  With about 22 ladies the amount we prepared was just right.  Everyone was full and there were no leftovers.  Here are a few of the recipes.  I hope they will become your favorites too!

Chicken Salad
I apologize but I do not have exact measurements for this recipe.  My friend and I always just mix everything until it looks "right."

2 cans canned chicken breast (ours was from Sam's Club)
chopped celery
mayo
onion powder
garlic salt
cesear dressing
salt and pepper to taste

We cooked and sliced a Pillsbury French Bread loaf to put the chicken salad on.  Just to make it fun and pretty we added a sliced star fruit.  Yum! Yum!

Succotash Salad
This was as easy and tasty as it was pretty!

2/3 cup tomatoes - quartered
1/4 cup sliced green onions
1 10 oz pkg frozen whole kernel corn
1 10 oz pkg edamame (original recipe called for lima beans)
1 tablespoon snipped fresh parsley

Dressing:
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons Italian dressing
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard

Cook beans and corn according to directions; drain. In a large bowl combine edamame, corn, tomatoes, onions and parsley.

In small bowl whisk together vinegar, dressing and mustard. Pour over bean mixture and toss to coat. Serve chilled.

Egg Salad
This was a very happy mistake.  We had planned on deviled eggs but the boiled eggs just would not peel cleanly so - hello egg salad!

6 hard boiled eggs
1/4 cup mayo
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon vinegar
paprika

Remove shell from eggs and mash whites and yolks together.  Add mayo, mustard and vinegar, mix well. Garnish with paprika.  We served the egg salad on the same type of Pillsbury French Bread loaf.

Blueberry Lemon Trifle
This is always a hit at any gathering.  We added an extra pound cake than what the recipe called for.

1 (16 ounce) frozen prepared pound cake
2 lemons
1 1/2 cups milk
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed, divided
2 (3.4 ounce) packages lemon instant pudding and pie filling
1 pint fresh blueberries (about 2 cups)

Cut pound cake into 1-inch cubes; place in large bowl. Using Lemon Zester/Scorer, make several lengthwise scores in one lemon, top to bottom; slice into slices. Zest remaining lemon using short strokes; set aside. Juice lemon and sprinkle lemon juice over pound cake; toss.

Combine milk, sour cream, half of the whipped topping and reserved lemon zest; whisk until smooth. Add pudding mix; whisk until mixture begins to thicken.

Set aside blueberries for garnish. To assemble trifle, place 1/3 of the cake cubes into bottom of trifle bowl. Top with 1/3 of the blueberries. Top with the pudding mixture, pressing lightly. Repeat layers 2 more times. Spread remaining pudding over entire top of trifle, creating a smooth surface. Top with extra blueberries.

April Showers

This was a busy weekend - not with sports and kids' activities like normal though.  My friend hosted at her house a baby shower for a really sweet mom-to-be and I got to help out.  Friday night was prep night - the decorations were in place and food prep started.  Saturday started early by visiting a co-worker's house to clip daffadils from the multitudes growing along the driveway.  Then back to the house for finishing touches on the menu.  Even though not all things went the way we had planned no one was any the wiser to our last minute changes.  The mom-to-be got lots of adorable and useful baby items and everyone had a great time.  My friend and I were past exhausted by the end of the night but still had time to hang out and watch the Kentucky Wildcats play in the Final Four.  So sad they lost by one point.  Better luck next year boys.

Here are some pics from the weekend.  I'll be back in another post with details on some of the projects.
